Oban Little Bay Whiskey is made in one of the smallest distilleries in all of Scotland, which actually predates the town that it is located in, of the same name. The distillery sits at sea level just 208 steps away from the sea, giving its concoctions a unique maritime character.
The malted barley used comes from the Maltings at Burghead near Elgin in Speyside, the peat is all harvested in Scotland, and the water comes from the local loch, three miles from the town. It's almost like a return journey for the water, wouldn't you say?
The production process for this excellent single malt is the same today as it was 200 years ago. A testament to Oban's steadfast dedication to tradition and quality. Barley is milled, mixed with water from the local loch in a mash tun, and stays in the whiskey wash backs for an unusually long amount of time, to create the traditional flavors. Yeast is added, and then the magic of distillation begins.
Production volume could increase if the Oban Distillery team sped up the process, but this would mean losing the gentle character of the whisky. Not a compromise Oban is willing to make - and neither are we!
For the No Age Statement Little Bay, whiskies of different ages matured in three types of casks are used: first-fill European oak ex-sherry casks; re-fill casks with new oak cask ends; and re-fill American oak hogsheads. These whiskies were then married for a short time in smaller oak casks to allow for more contact with the wood and integration. The result? A spirit packed with depth and complexity.
Recommended ByThis offering from Oban is simply its original single malt that’s just left to age a little longer in small oak casks. This gives it an added level of rich, smooth, balanced sweetness with just the right amount of smoke, spice, and dryness.- Uproxx
